Director of Development

Summary:

Great Lake Outreach seeks a Director of Development (DOD) to build a fundraising initiative that provides support for its priorities and advances its mission.

Great Lakes Outreach was founded by Simon Guillebaud in 2003 after four years of working in war torn Burundi.   GLO strategically partners with what we believe are some of the best leaders in the country to see holistic change.  

The Director of Development will be expected to:

• Conceive and execute a comprehensive development strategy that raises funds in support of the mission.
• Lead the executive director, the board, and development office staff in fundraising
• Understand and embrace the mission of the (organization) and articulate it in a succinct and compelling manner
• Identify, cultivate, solicit and steward donors
• Oversee fundraising initiatives of the organization including design, coordination and implementation of all development activities, short term and longer term solicitation strategies and effective stewardship to maintain major gift support from existing and future donors
• Obtain funds from foundations, corporations, individuals and government sources through grant writing, annual appeals, events and strategic campaigns
• Take lead responsibility for writing grant proposals and reports, research and briefing materials for calls
• Maintain current knowledge of institutional funding sources, with particular attention to education and non-profit support
• Manage the development office staff
• Oversee staff responsible for maintenance of computer-based records that hold donor and prospect information and gift accounting records.
• Oversee the organization of special events for the purpose of donor cultivation
• Work closely with other areas of the organization to ensure development initiatives are communicated and supported
• Guide marketing strategies and practices as related to fundraising activities
• Work with the executive director and trustees to recruit, train and support board members

The Ideal Candidate will have:

• Experience/knowledge of annual giving; membership (or alumni giving); online giving; major gifts; corporate sponsorship; events; and planned giving fundamentals
• Demonstrated success effectively researching, identifying, cultivating, soliciting and stewarding prospects and donors
• Experience with and knowledge of local and national philanthropic communities
• Excellent leadership, management, writing and communication skills
• Strong organization, planning and implementation skills
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office and knowledge of Raiser’s Edge
• A four-year degree is required.
• We would like at least 4 years of experience in a DOD position.
