Provides leadership and direction for all components of the Specialized Learning Services (SLS) program designed to support student-athletes who may be at heightened academic risk, have learning challenges and/or diagnosed learning disabilities. Recognize and identify student-athletes with potential learning disabilities. Provides intensive academic support to a designated caseload of student-athletes. Assesses and coordinates utilization of preferred testing instruments to assess population. Collaborates closely with Academic Services staff and Behavioral Health Coordinator in Athletics as well as key campus partners such as the Academic Success Center, Students with Disabilities Services (SDS) Office and Psychological Services to help students develop individual academic support plans and utilize available resources and accommodations. Develop and apply learning strategies and study skills designed to best support student-athlete growth and success and advise/communicate strategies to applicable Academic Services staff. Develops and implements a variety of educational initiatives, trainings and workshops for student-athletes and staff including Tutor Training, Intern Development Program Training and Professional Development, Athletics Orientation, Athletics Summer Bridge Program, etc. Consult with coaches, as authorized, regarding student-athletes with learning concerns. In collaboration with USF Athletics Behavioral Health Coordinator, manage academic assessment/testing process, including vetting of students, making recommendations, managing budget and communication between all applicable staff. Interpret and evaluate diagnostic results and make recommendations/referrals for further testing and utilization of accommodations as necessary. Serves as liaison to applicable campus departments. Responsible for management and development of two Assistant Learning Specialists. Performs other operational and administrative duties as assigned to support the Specialized Learning Services program and the Academic Services unit. This position reports directly to the Associate Athletic Director for Academics.
Minimum Qualifications: The position requires a Master's degree in education or a field of study related to the academic program, or a Bachelor's degree in those same fields with a minimum of two years of experience.
Preferred Qualifications: 3+ years’ experience as a Learning Specialist, Teacher/Instructor, or related position; Expertise in working closely with learning deficient students, developing relevant programming and utilization and education of appropriate learning strategies and techniques; Experience selecting and utilizing testing instruments to assess population; Experience working with student-athletes, coaches, support staff and administration in an intercollegiate athletics department at the Division I level; Experience with public speaking and motivational techniques; Experience in utilizing and reading educational assessments and psych-educational testing results and implementing effective strategy and support; Previous supervision of part-time or full-time staff. Experience utilizing Grades First.
