|Summary of Position || |
The primary purpose of the position of Assistant Vice Chancellor for Major Gifts is to assist the Vice Chancellor for University Advancement in the oversight of the major gifts program at UNCW to include direct supervisory responsibility for four directors of development for major gifts, a development director for planned giving, and the prospect development manager. In partnership with the Vice Chancellor, it is expected that the Assistant Vice Chancellor for Major Gifts will play a critical role of the advancement of the major gifts program at UNCW.
The Assistant Vice Chancellor for Major Gifts reports to the Vice Chancellor for University Advancement and serves as a member of University Advancement’s leadership team. In partnership with the Vice Chancellor, this position develops short and long term strategies for ongoing fundraising and engagement initiatives in support of the university strategic philanthropic priorities. The Assistant Vice Chancellor for Major Gifts also assists in strategic planning related to accountability and reporting. This position plays an instrumental role in planning for campus priorities in conjunction with campus-wide major gifts fundraising initiatives. The Assistant Vice Chancellor for Major Gifts works with the Vice Chancellor to increase overall private support and in developing accountability measurements to track the performance of the major and principal gifts team.
This position is expected to display a high level of leadership, as well as experience and skill in an advancement environment, including a personal track record in fundraising. He or she will integrate institutional priorities into strategic planning, goal-setting, and performance evaluation. The executive director will be responsible for managing the infrastructure of the major gifts program and work with other units to ensure its success.
|Minimum Requirements || |
• Proven leadership in major gifts operations with a minimum of five years of higher education and development experience.
• Strong interpersonal skills excellent written and verbal communication skills, strong judgment and code of personal ethics, and successful management experience
• Demonstrated ability to improve organizational effectiveness and results providing strategic positioning direction and leadership.
• A thorough appreciation for strategic institutional planning and its relationship to the effective application of basic and complex fundraising principles.
• Ability to understand and articulate institutional values, and work collaboratively with faculty, administration, students and alumni.
• Strong management and team leadership experience, including the ability to empower, build initiative sustain motivation of a strong staff and to lead by example with internal and external constituencies.
• Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
• Ability to operate effectively, flexibly and collegially in a complex organizational environment.
• Bachelor’s degree is required.

The division for University Advancement is responsible for the following primary goals:
1) Coordinate a campus-wide, comprehensive effort to raise external philanthropic funds to support the strategic mission of the university.
2) Manage a comprehensive alumni engagement program to ensure that alumni are active in the life of the university by being partners, advocates, and investors.
3) Ensure that external boards (UNCW Foundation Board, Board of Visitors, Student Aid Association Board, Alumni Association Board of Directors and the Friends of UNCW) are effective in their mission of supporting UNCW.
The division strives to generate private philanthropic support for UNCW, as guided by the university’s strategic plan and chancellor’s priorities, to further the university mission of securing the resources that will enable faculty and students to excel.
In doing so, the division plans strategically to facilitate the identification, qualification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of all donor constituencies, and seeks to positively promote the university. The division’s development and alumni engagement efforts are enhanced by effective partnerships with all components of the campus community as well as external audiences including alumni, parents, corporations, foundations, volunteer board members, and friends. Front-line development programs include Principal Gifts, Major Gifts, Planned Giving, Corporate and Foundation Engagement, Parent Giving, Annual Giving, Leadership Annual Giving, and Athletics Development; Fundraising support includes Prospect Development, Donor Engagement (stewardship), and Advancement Services; Engagement programs include Board Management, Alumni Relations, Alumni and Donor Communications.
