The Charles E. Smith Center has served as the home of the George Washington University Department of Athletics and Recreation for more than 30 years. The facility’s primary purpose is housing the majority of GW’s 27 intercollegiate varsity sports, practice space for club sports, classroom space for Exercise Science classes, and office space for the Department of Athletics and Recreation. In addition, the Smith Center has also hosted many major events and concerts throughout the years, and is available to host smaller scale events in our two clubrooms.
Reporting directly to the head of Events, Facilities, and Operations, the Athletics Operations Associate for the Charles E. Smith Center is primarily responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Center, ensuring that the center is operational and fully staffed. Primary duties include the following:
Manages daily, event, and logistical operations for the Charles E. Smith Center and Athletics Townhouses including, but not limited to, staffing and facilities maintenance. Provides general/routine building and equipment repair. Serves as the liaison with contractors and GW Facilities for building and equipment maintenance. Facilitates and monitors repairs to ensure they are completed in a timely manner. Assists supervisor with capital and special project coordination (e.g., facilities upgrade, major repairs, etc.). Assists with staffing Center for events and full operation throughout the year, ensuring proper room setup/take-down for all practices, games, classes, and events, inclusive of set-up and take-down. Collaborates with appropriate campus departments to respond to issues that arise (University Police Department, Safety and Security, etc.). Collaborates with Office of Student Employment for the recruitment and hiring of 50+ person student staff to maintain operation of building and events as well as an additional 30+ for backup, rotation, or special event support. Assists with scheduling and supervising student staff, maintaining adequate staffing levels to meet work responsibilities. Assists supervisor with budget oversight of student staff personnel, including Federal Work Study, Hourly Wage employees, and temporary appointments, and liaises with the Finance department for payroll. Serves as one of the Athletics Department’s timekeepers, processing timesheets for payroll for all non-exempt personnel (full-time, part-time, temporary, student, etc.). Ensures training and development requirements of skilled student work force are identified and implemented. Creates, coordinates, maintains, and implements all initial and ongoing student employee training sessions, including operations, safety/security, and risk management/reduction. Liaises with internal and external constituents to ensure that all aspects of training are up-to-date and relevant. The position is based at GW’s Foggy Bottom Campus in Washington, DC. May require travel to Athletics Townhouses, Mount Vernon Campus, Barcroft Park (Arlington, VA) and the Thompson Boat House. The incumbent may perform other related duties as assigned.
