The Accounting Manager is responsible for the ongoing accounting and financial analysis requirements of Waukegan Steel. The position will be a key manager in the organization and will lead the Waukegan Steel accounting team as well as regularly interact with the President of Waukegan Steel and the National Material L.P. finance organization (the parent company of Waukegan Steel). Responsibilities will include analyzing customer/project profitability, maintaining accurate “percentage of completion” accounting and related work in process reporting for each customer contract, maintaining an accurate and reconciled general ledger, annual budget preparation, forecasting, and performance reporting.
Maintain weekly, monthly and annual accounting, with emphasis on percentage of completion accounting including, project tracking, work in process accounting and accurate financial reporting.
Ensure that all accounting functions are performed in an accurate, complete and timely manner in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles (US GAAP) and Waukegan Steel policies and procedures.
Maintain accounting records for Waukegan Steel (ensuring all general ledger accounts are reconciled and analyzed) and confirm the accuracy of operating and financial reports.
Establish and maintain key performance indicators (KPI) for field and executive management.
Advise upper management regarding matters, such as effective use of resources and methods, working capital, etc.
Leads the Waukegan Steel accounting team including the development of team members, planning & coordinating work as well as ensuring understanding of policies and procedures.
Direct system evaluation and implementation for a project accounting software solution; address process changes resulting from any system implementations.
Development and presentation of the annual operating plan for Waukegan Steel.
Oversees determination of depreciation rates to apply to capital assets.
Analyze records of present and past operations, trends and costs, estimated and realized revenues, administrative commitments, and obligations incurred.
Recommend future financial plans and policies that assist in the managing the operations of Waukegan Steel.
Assist with the internal and external auditing process as needed.
Participate in other financial or management project initiatives, as necessary.
A Bachelor’s degree in Accounting required.
CPA strongly preferred
Minimum 5-7 years of progressive work experience in accounting and project/job management
Direct experience within the construction industry strongly preferred
1-2 years of staff management experience within an Accounting & Finance function.
Must have strong financial management skills (quantitative as well as qualitative) including reporting and budgeting
Strong working knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles and percentage of completion, accounting in particular.
Advanced skills in Microsoft Office Suite, specifically Excel is required.
Familiarity with Fabtrol and Timerberline extremely helpful.
