The Fleet Science Center is San Diego’s only interactive science center and home to the world’s first Giant IMAX Dome Theater. With more than 400,000 visitors annually, we’re proud to be the most visited museum in Balboa Park. The Fleet opened in 1973 and is now growing into a dynamic, county-wide organization dedicated to inspiring and connecting San Diegans of all ages to use the power of science to improve their lives, strengthen our community and change the world.
We have a bold vision and have created a new position, Vice President for Advancement to help us make it a reality. As a driver of growth, The Vice President for Advancement will serve as a key member of the Senior Leadership Team, reporting directly to the Chief Executive Officer. The VP will be responsible for developing the vision, strategies and tactics for all fundraising initiatives. This position will give the right person the opportunity to use their experience, existing relationships and initiative to develop creative strategies to achieve our goals. The VP for Advancement actively supports our mission and goals by:
Leading a team of fundraising professionals to achieve annual and long-term goals for the membership, major gifts, foundations and planned and corporate giving efforts
Being active in the community, strengthening our presence by building relationships with top donors and community leaders to realize a new level of philanthropic success for the Fleet
Partnering with the CEO, members of the Board of Trustees and other volunteer leaders, and other organizations to optimize fundraising success, achieve the goals of the institutional strategic plan, the strategic fundraising plan and foster a culture of philanthropy throughout the Fleet
WHAT YOU NEED:
If you are the ideal candidate, you will be a driver of change and passionate about creating new and innovative ways to engage individual donors in the Fleet’s programs and initiatives. In addition you will have:
Seven to ten years successful experience in managing multiple aspects of a comprehensive institutional giving program including special events, annual fund, Leadership Circle, grants, and major gifts.
Ability to effectively interface and build and retain relationships with the organization’s executive and volunteer leadership, prospects, and donors.
Ability to understand the needs and interests of institutional donors, sponsors, grantors, and funders in order to develop relationships between them and the Fleet.
Successful experience developing and executing cultivation and solicitation strategies, face-to-face fundraising, and managing a portfolio of institutional major gift, sponsorship, and grant prospects, donors, and funders.
Ability to interact with and represent the organization’s mission effectively to high potential prospects and donors, diverse constituents, and the public.
Experience in securing six- and seven-figure contributions and sponsorships.
Experience in developing and executing strategic fundraising and operational plans.
Experience in proactive performance reporting.
Ability to effectively supervise, motivate and support others in a dynamic team environment.
Project and budget management and financial reporting skills.
Local San Diego development experience required.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Raiser’s Edge.
Bachelor’s Degree or commensurate experience.
Previous experience in science, engineering or technology-related areas preferred.

At the science center, you can explore and investigate more than 100 interactive exhibits that pique your curiosity and become immersed in an IMAX film adventure that shows the wonders of the planet—and beyond—in the Eugene Heikoff and Marilyn Jacobs Heikoff Giant Dome Theat...er. For young science enthusiasts, the Fleet hosts school field trips, science workshops and educational camps.
For adults, we offer events like Fleet Night of Science and community events, such as Two Scientists Walk Into a Bar. In the community, we also provide free neighborhood science events weekly through 52 Weeks of Science. Teachers are encouraged to join our Teacher Partner Program and take advantage of our professional development opportunities.
Additionally, at the Fleet Science Center, visitors will find unique educational toys and games, books, IMAX DVDs and more in the North Star Science Store, and pizzas, sandwiches, salads and healthy treats in Craveology.
