| The United States Sports Academy is recruiting for two professionals in Sports Management and Exercise Science to work in the Republic of Gabon. Eligible candidates for these assignments must speak fluent French. The positions are a part of a project to assist in the development of the county’s sport infrastructure in the areas of sports management, strength and conditioning for the nation’s teams, physical education and scholastic sports for the school system and general assistance to country’s Central Sports Organization. |
The candidates must have proven ability in their respective disciplines and the ability to work without direct supervision in a fluid operating environment. Candidates should have a strong background in sports with a capability to evaluate, plan and assist with the upgrading and modernization of the programs for the governmental agency. Experience in planning of appropriate sport facilities to include writing specifications for sports equipment to support the national sports program
These exciting opportunities require a three-year commitment and has a starting salary commensurate with education and experience and, according to current tax regulations, this income may be exempt from Federal income tax! On top of the annual salary will be furnished housing and use of an automobile. While in Gabon, a number of extra benefits include paid holidays as observed by the Republic of Gabon, airfare to and from Gabon upon commencement and conclusion of the term, 30 calendar days annual paid vacation and airfare for one vacation annually after 11 months.
The Gabonese Republic, commonly referred to as Gabon, is a part of Francophone Africa and English is not widely spoken. While up to 40 indigenous languages are spoken in Gabon, roughly 80 percent of the population speaks French. Gabon’s economy is powered by oil revenues, which comprise nearly 50 percent of the country’s gross domestic product and 80 percent of its exports. The oil industry has helped to make Gabon one of the more prosperous countries in Sub-Saharan Africa. However, the country is unevenly developed with the most advanced areas centered on the coastal cities of Libreville (the Capitol and where the team will be based) and Port Gentil.
Gabon is located on the equator, on the west coast of Central Africa the climate is hot and humid and the country gets significant amounts of rain, especially during the four month rainy season. With more than 10% of the country proclaimed as national parkland, and the majority of it comprised of dense rainforest, Gabon offers a spectacular array of wildlife in its jungle and open savannahs to enthrall nature enthusiasts. The successful candidate must have a minimum of a master’s degree (a terminal degree is preferred) in their respective disciplines:
For the sports management position, a degree in sports management and a minimum of seven years of experience in the field. Experience with administering sports in an international setting a plus.
For the Exercise Science position, a degree in exercise physiology, fitness management or related field and a minimum of five years of experience in the field. A CSCS credential and experience in developing programs from scratch is a plus.
Fluent French language skills are required. Insofar as there will be a component to the program in developing scholastic sports programs, preference will be given to candidates who have experience in fitness assessment, fitness testing, developing intramural leagues and extramural teams for competition.
