JOB OVERVIEW The Senior Director, Foundation and Gift Accounting, oversees the financial accounting and reporting function for UCSF, the UCSF Foundation and the BCH-Oakland Foundation, which collectively hold a $1.2 billion unitized endowment and receive gifts totalling about $400 million annually. As a member of the gift and foundation accounting shared service team reporting to the Executive Director, Financial Services and Administration in the UCSF Development Office, the Senior Director ensures that the financial reporting requirements for gifts and endowments related to UCSF and the BCHO Foundation are met. This position will have strong relationships with the UCSF Controller and UCSF Health Controllers. Will work extensively with others to ensure consistency of gift accounting practices among UCSF, UCSF Health, and BCHO activities, and to ensure the efficient operation of the accounting function. Conceives and guides systems improvements to improve efficiency and quality of information. Establishes objectives and work plans. Reviews and approves recommendations for accounting department programs. Responsible for managing, preparing, administering, and directing accounting department resources. Involved in developing, modifying and executing policies that affect immediate operation(s) and may also have organization-wide effect. Erroneous decisions or failure to achieve goals results in additional costs and personnel, and serious delays in overall schedules.
UNIVERSITY DEVELOPMENT & ALUMNI RELATIONS The Benioff Children’s Hospital (Oakland) Foundation, UCSF Foundation and the Office of University Development and Alumni Relations (UDAR) are responsible for fostering and strengthening the campus outreach efforts to BCH-Oakland and UCSF constituents and for garnering private support for BCH, UCSF Health, and the campus. In raising private support, UDAR identifies, qualifies, solicits and stewards donors for the schools, medical centers, departments and programs on campus. It is also responsible for formal acceptance and administration of all private gifts to the university through The Regents, the UCSF Foundation, and the BCH-Oakland Foundation; and for managing all alumni relations activities, campus support group activities and campus events. The UDAR office staffs the UCSF Foundation and, through a management services agreement, provides development and management services to the BCH-Oakland Foundation.

Bachelor's degree in accounting or related area and/or equivalent experience / training
CPA (active license is preferred)
At least 7-10 years’ experience in a complex accounting environment
At least three years’ experience as a controller, assistant controller, or similar role in a complex accounting environment
Supervisory experience in complex Foundation or nonprofit finance and accounting function
Demonstrated awareness of GASB and FASB guidance in accounting and financial reporting
Thorough knowledge of finance, accounting, business and systems operations and regulatory compliance requirements
Knowledge of industry best practices
Excellent skills using common desktop/web applications. Demonstrated experience in automating and improving processes involving financial systems
Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively across the organization at all levels
Sophisticated service orientation, strong management skills, leadership skills, sound judgment and decision-making, critical thinking, creative problem solving, and effective verbal and written communication skills
Excellent writing, speaking, and presentation skills

Thorough knowledge of the organization's operational, personnel, and financial transactions and financial systems
Familiarity with unitized endowment fund management
