About Maine Veterans’ Homes
Maine is a veterans’ state. About one in ten Maine residents is a veteran, a rate that is 50 percent higher than the national average.
Caring for Those Who Have Served is our mission. Established as an independent not-for-profit, 501 (c)3 corporation, our first veterans home opened in Augusta in 1983, with subsequent facilities established in Caribou, Scarborou...gh, Bangor, South Paris, and Machias. With a combined 640 beds and a wide range of post-acute and long term care services, we are proud to take great care of those who dedicated some of the best years of their lives to taking great care of our country.
Maine Veterans’ Homes is not part of the national Veterans Administration health care system, nor is it a state-run organization. MVH has distinguished itself as a leader in providing quality care to older veterans. All six of our homes have achieved national recognition by earning Silver-level awards for Achievement in Quality from the American Health Care Association – a distinction earned by just 20 percent of facilities nationwide. In 2016, MVH Scarborough earned the highest recognition for Excellence in Quality – Gold, a distinction achieved by just 31 facilities nationwide.
