PURPOSE OF POSITION: United Way of Central Virginia (UWCV) has a 44 year history of serving Central Virginia with a mission to mobilize the compassionate power of our Community to improve the quality of lives in Central Virginia. The President/CEO purpose of position is to provide leadership to the staff and volunteers in carrying out the policies of the corporation as established by the Board of Directors; to suggest new policies, programs, strategies, and activities for consideration by the Board of Directors; to see that the corporation's objectives are effectively pursued; to keep the Board of Directors informed on matters of interest.
Our strategic community goal is to have 90% third grade reading passing proficiency by the year 2025. The strategy is being accomplished through a community impact model that mobilizes a broad range of community partners to work together to create community change. UWCV serves as the backbone organization supporting the collaborative partners in their work. The focus is on early childhood development and school readiness; having all youth graduate from high school prepared for post-secondary education; and have all working families thrive.
OVERVIEW OF RESPONSIBILITIES
The President/CEO (CEO) is the leader of the organization, establishing a vision for Community Impact that is achieved through the efforts of a diverse team of high-performing leaders, staff and volunteers alike. The CEO is the Chief Mobilizer.
The CEO leverages the power of relationships and networks, and works across private, public and corporate sectors to improve conditions in the community. The CEO possesses a high level of broad business and management skills and is effective at generating resources and financial support for the organization. The CEO is dedicated to shared and measurable goals for the common good – creating, resourcing, scaling and leveraging strategies for broad investment and impact. The CEO is the steward of brand and understands their role in growing and protecting the reputation of United Way. The CEO is responsible for building trust in United Way and its relevance in the community.
The Major Responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:
Responsible for the overall impact of UWCV on the community, with particular emphasis on increasing its capacity to drive the impact agenda.
- To provide long term visioning and strategic direction consistent with the direction of the Board of directors.
- To determine objectives and strategies for meeting goals; allocate resources according to priorities; determine how to use personnel and resources to accomplish associated tasks; and anticipate obstacles.
- To supervise the community impact staff to ensure the effective implementation of the corporation’s plans and achievement of its objectives, including all contract activities and internal programs.
- To develop, implement, manage and continually improve the planning process of the corporation.
- To manage the development and execution of the approved plan for the distribution of funds available for support of agency services with a focus on demonstrated outcomes.
- To attract the highest level of volunteer ability and commitment to this function.
- To keep abreast of current and new developments in this area.
Finance & Administration
- To conduct the business and financial affairs of the United Way according to ethical and acceptable standards of business and regulatory agencies at the lowest possible cost.
- To assure the staff is composed of competent, productive individuals who work at a sustained level of excellence.
- To provide volunteers and other organizations, as appropriate, accurate information on the organization's financial position and expenditures.
- To ensure the completion of all financial, tax, and grant reports in the appropriate timeframe.
- To provide appropriate training opportunities for both volunteers and staff.
- To search for the most efficient way of conducting the business of the corporation without sacrificing quality performance.
- To make sure all requested reports to United Way World Wide are completed on a yearly basis.
- To drive key results in fundraising; to identify, cultivate and solicit prospective donors and key leaders of prospective new corporate partners.
- To leverage personal and professional contacts and relationships into fundraising opportunities; and to promote a culture of fundraising in the organization, both at the staff and board level.
- To manage the conduct of an annual campaign and all year-around fund raising activities, including special events and grant writing.
- To provide active support to the Leadership Giving Program, including the Alexis de Tocqueville Society.
- To attract the highest level of community leadership to the campaign.
- To insure that a master campaign plan and time schedule is prepared and adhered to by staff and volunteers.
- To put in place operating and effective automated systems that will provide necessary management information and financial accountability.
- To serve as the principal resource to the Board of Directors and its key committees and give strong direction in policy formulation and interpretation.
- To works with the staff Leadership Team to ensure coordination and alignment of all UWCV activities to strategic direction in the areas of community impact, resource development, and staff alignment.
- To recognize that UWCV is a consumer brand and continually manage the brand as a strategic asset.
- To be accountable for building and leading high-performing teams, ensuring all teams are aligned and collaborating to achieve organizational results.
- To maintain accountability for the operational and fiscal integrity of the organization within policies set by the Board of Directors.
- To assess organizational capacity to implement strategies and identify gaps in systems and staffing; directly supervises Director positions and establish individual goals; works with the Chief Financial Officer to manage organizational spending, monitor budget compliance, and mitigate financial risk.
Marketing & Communications
- To see that a year-round program of public relations is conducted to bring the broadest possible positive support to the United Way from all of its publics.
- To attract capable and effective volunteer leadership to this function.
- To assess the attitudes of citizens toward the corporation and its methods of conducting business.
- To search for new ways to be more effective in bringing broad understanding of the United Way
to the community.
- To remain informed on public issues, local, state or national, which affect the corporation and to act thereon so as to enhance and when appropriate project the corporate image.
- To represent the organization throughout the community; develop and enhance relationships with other funding and service organizations; develop and enhance relationships with organizations and officials within all the municipalities; serve as media spokesperson for the organization regarding policy issues and the strategic direction of the organization.
- To provide leadership in relations with United Way of America, other United Way Executives, Board of Directors, Executive Committee, other Committees of the Board, and staff.
Relations with the Board and Committees
- To keep the Board of Directors fully informed of the status of work within the corporation.
- To keep the Board and membership aware of the latest developments affecting the United Way to include governmental actions and those within the United Way movement.
- To suggest new policies and programs that will keep the corporation viable and responsive to changing needs and times.
- To ensure the effective implementation of the organization's strategic plan.
- To staff and/or oversee the staff of various committees to ensure the implementation of the organization's objectives.
