The Assistant Athletics Director of Communications is responsible for the communication of news and marketing of St. Mary’s 11 intercollegiate NCAA DII athletics teams through creative written and visual content, effective promotion to local and regional media, and engaging outreach to the campus and external communities. This person also maintains the athletics website and social media platforms, in addition to the archiving of statistics and records. This person reports to the Associate Athletics Director of External Operations. In addition, this person must be committed to the educational Mission of the University.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned. •Write and edit news releases, game stories, feature articles, scripts and other materials for dissemination to national, regional and local media. Send and coordinate the sending of statistics, rosters, signing lists, schedules, photos and other information to the media, NCAA, opponents and conference offices. •Responsible for updating, writing, editing and proofreading all athletics publications such as the athletics website, promotional posters, alumni magazine, brochures, game programs and record books. •Develop, design and edit unique video, graphical and other visual content for website, social media and the Rattler Network to ensure thorough and engaging athletics coverage is maintained for all sports across all platforms. •Manage social media accounts with utilization of latest trends and best practices. •Create and implement fresh marketing strategies, community outreach initiatives and in-game promotional activities for each sport to increase engagement and game attendance among students, faculty, alumni and the greater community. •Responsible for interviewing, training, evaluation, coaching, professional development, and oversight of a graduate assistant and internship students from the School of Humanities and Social Sciences. •Develop good working relationships with local media, and maintain and monitor media relations and news coverage locally, regionally and nationally. •Maintain official game statistics, statistical archives and record-keeping, and coordinate the communication of game results to the news media and posting to the athletics website. •Assist with coordination, promotion and content creation for special events such as donor socials, athletics banquet and Hall of Fame ceremony. •Manage technical setup and maintenance of live video broadcasts of games. •Develop and maintain a close working relationship with the Director of Athletics and establish positive relations with the Athletics administration, coaches, staff, student-athletes as well as the rest of the University’s faculty, staff, students, alumni and fans. •Support the Office of University Communications by keeping the staff informed of important recognitions, awards, record breaking achievements, wins and other relevant information on student-athletes and the coaching staff. •Must be available to work nights and weekends as required.
EDUCATION: Bachelor’s degree required, preferable in English/Communications/Journalism. Sports marketing, design and photography experience preferred.
QUALIFICATIONS: •Five years professional experience in writing, editing, media relations or sports information. Experience in a University athletics setting preferred; experience as a student-athlete or professional internships in collegiate athletics apply •Excellent verbal, grammatical, spelling and fact checking skills. Knowledge of AP style; attention to detail is a must. •Proficient in Microsoft based applications and Statcrew. •Ability to manage multiple projects concurrently; ability to set and meet deadlines. •Knowledge of publication design and video editing software. Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite preferred. •Knowledge of Sidearm Sports website client preferred.
