Dumbarton Oaks Research Library and Collection, in Washington, DC, is a research institute, museum, and historic garden located in Washington, D.C. and affiliated with Harvard University. The research institute supports scholarship in Byzantine, Garden and Landscape, and Pre-Columbian Studies through an international fellowship competition, scholarly meetings, exhibitions, and publications. The museum and garden welcome thousands of visitors every year.
The Director of Finance will work closely with the Director, Executive Director, and department heads to provide excellent stewardship and to ensure the efficient financial management of the organization. Dumbarton Oaks is supported by an endowment and has revenues from garden admission, the museum shop, an annual concert series, and several publication series. The Director of Finance will lead a team of four finance professionals to support these diverse activities and provide financial oversight of significant capital projects. • Serve as senior financial advisor to the Director and Executive Director. • Oversee all accounting, cash management, procurement, benefits and payroll functions and internal controls, with support of Finance team, to ensure that systems are in place for accurate and compliant operations. • Lead the Finance team: provide guidance, track performance, and recommend training and professional development opportunities as appropriate. • Manage accounting practices and policies; fiscal controls; maintenance of fiscal records; and the preparation and distribution of financial statements and reports. Oversee the preparation and distribution of monthly reports to departments to enable accurate tracking of expenses. • Develop and present financial reports and updates to the Director and Executive Director, the Harvard FAS Finance office, and the Divisional Dean Office. • Oversee the financial aspects of capital planning and financing of capital projects. • Work with the Director and Executive Director to prepare and submit the annual operating budget and forecasts, including communication of annual budget guidelines, and collaboration with department heads to prepare and track unit budgets throughout the fiscal year; ensure proper budget management and strategic stewardship of restricted accounts. • Ensure compliance with GAAP, Harvard University and FAS policies and procedures, and external regulations and tax codes as appropriate; implement SAS112 internal control requirements; serve as liaison to the University for annual audit requests; work with the University tax office in the preparation of the 990 and other related DC tax filings. • Ensure the effective and appropriate use of University and local systems; maintain Dumbarton Oaks chart of accounts and security for system access. • Coordinate and collaborate regularly with other Harvard University administrative offices as appropriate. • Undertake additional assignments as directed by the Director of Dumbarton Oaks.
Lead a team of four full-time finance professionals. Manage two direct reports.
• Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience required • Minimum of 8 years' relevant work experience • Supervisory experience
• MBA (Master’s degree in a business, financial or related field or equivalent work experience), CPA or equivalent, with at least 8 years' financial management experience and 5 years of experience as a senior budget/finance officer. • Experience working in a higher education environment (including grants and fellowships), or non-profit institution highly desirable. • Experience with construction accounting desirable. Strong knowledge of accounting and fund accounting; high-level analytical skills; ability to provide financial forecasts and models; deft use of financial software. Excellent communication skills; ability to exercise discretion and show independent judgment and initiative. Demonstrated ability to motivate, develop, and lead a team.
