Direct event operations for all 19 sports teams plus Championship, University and Community events for the department
Major Duties and Responsibilities
Oversight of all security and event operations for all 19 sport teams, coordinating with multiple departments within DIA, the University of Illinois, and the local community. Oversee all game day logistics and security and safety needs for Illinois football games and other events. This includes coordination with area law enforcement and emergency management personnel to emphasize the safety of all fans, student-athletes, and event workers. Provide ultimate supervisory authority for approximately 400 event management staff members. Manage event operations budget of over $2 million. Supervise full-time event operations staff and graduate assistant employees including hiring, training, approving leave/time, assignment work, and reviewing work. Direct NCAA Championship events. Prepare and oversee bid documents for postseason events, execute events when awarded, and settle budgets post-event. Provide guidance on the management of special University and community events held in DIA facilities. Direct Big Ten championship events and settle budgets post event when scheduled as the host institution. Direct off-site basketball events in St. Louis and Chicago, and football events in Chicago. Work with the director of operations for post-season travel for various men's and women's teams. Manage the scheduling of athletics facilities for the Division of Intercollegiate Athletics (DIA) for campus and community entities. Coordinate with all 19 sports and facilities operations on the space for competitions and practices. Work with facilities operations on the negotiations of contracts for facility use with outside organizations, such as local high schools, community entities, and the Illinois High School Association. Recruit, hire, train, and manage payroll for game day event staff including but not limited to scoring, timing, instant replay monitors. Manage scoring/timing systems for all sports. Project liaison with other campus units and represents DIA as an active member of committees for campus-wide events such as Convocation and Commencement. Maintain knowledge of and compliance with, specific NCAA, Big Ten Conference, and institution rules that relate to this position are required.
Bachelor’s degree in sport management, recreation, and tourism or other closely related field required,
Master’s degree in the same fields of study preferred.
Five to seven years of full-time collegiate athletic experience required in event management or operations preferably at a “Power 5” football and basketball school. Experience working with major broadcast television networks on the production and needs of live broadcasts. Experience working on the setup and staffing of instant replay set up for live sporting events. Experience working in collaboration with major college football and basketball security and safety protocols and working with law enforcement personnel. Experience managing NCAA and preferably Big Ten Championship events and experience bidding for championship events through the NCAA.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Ability and experience with computer environment. Organizational skills with attention to detail. Demonstrated working knowledge of Big Ten and NCAA rules and regulations. Professional attitude, proven verbal and written communication skills, good interpersonal skills and initiative necessary.
