The Director of Development is responsible for overseeing the resource development, public relations and marketing programs of The Free Clinic. The Director of Development is a part of the organization’s leadership team. Working closely with the Executive Director, he/she manages and coordinates fundraising and public relations communication as well as volunteers and interns.
Duties and responsibilities
Fund Development – shape, manage and drive the implementation of a successful fundraising strategy to support organizational and project development needs, including:
Develop and implement cost-effective fund development program involving individuals, businesses and private foundations
Develop and implement specific campaigns for tax-credits, planned giving, charitable trusts, endowments, and development projects
Direct the production of annual fundraising events and appeals
Develop calendars, plans, and marketing material for fundraising events and appeals
Identify, cultivate, recruit, and organize fund development leaders and volunteers
Establish recognition, acknowledgements, and incentives for donors and volunteers
Utilize Bloomerang workflow management system to plan, implement, and evaluate specific fund development programs and campaigns
Assist in the development of grant proposals.
Communications - shape, manage and drive the implementation of an effective outreach and communication campaign to educate and cultivate community support, including:
Develop and implement cost-effective marketing and outreach strategies to communicate with a range of constituencies through printed and electronic media
Create, write, edit and produce press releases, publications, videos, exhibits, and printed materials, including annual reports
Update and maintain organization’s website, on-line publications, and social media.
Bachelor’s degree required.
Minimum of three years’ experience in fundraising, public relations/marketing and management.
Proven track record of raising funds from diverse sources, including major gifts from individuals, foundations, corporations and government agencies.
Experience in donor cultivation, grant writing, contracts management and special events.
Demonstrated commitment to accountability, measuring outcomes and a results-oriented culture.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Strong interpersonal, supervision, administration and management skills.
Ability to handle and prioritize multiple tasks while maintaining attention to detail.
Familiarity with donor tracking systems.
Ability to work with diverse groups of people.
Sound judgment, professionalism and a positive attitude.

The mission of the Free Clinic is to provide affordable, sustainable health care services for low income and uninsured adults, primarily through volunteer resources and community support. The overall vision for the Free Clinic is to help build a healthier community. The Free Clinic serves clients without health insurance, between ages 18-64 years old, with income at or below 300% of the federal poverty level, and residents of Harrisonburg or Rockingham County. Using primarily volunteers from a base of approximately 220 local professionals, a staff of 17, and donations, the Free Clinic provides affordable, quality, comprehensive, healthcare, including medications.
