PRIMARY FUNCTION: Support the Director of Sports Medicine/Head Athletic Trainer and health care team including team physicians in providing medical coverage and support for the delivery of an integrated health care system to student-athletes participating in intercollegiate athletics sport programs.
RESPONSIBILITIES RELATED TO ASSISTANT ATHLETIC TRAINER:
Provide prevention, evaluation, care and rehabilitation services to student-athletes for all athletically related injuries and illnesses sustained during practices and athletic competition. Provide medical coverage and care for men and women’s athletics teams, coordinate pre-practice, practice, post-practice and athletic team competition medical needs, specifically Women’s Gymnastics. Coverage may also include other activities as assigned. Maintain and document medical records, rehabilitation programs and reconditioning programs of student-athletes’ injuries and illnesses within SIMS medical documentation system. Communicate with all needed parties on injury and illness information including student-athletes, parents, physicians, mental health providers, administration, athletic training staff, coaching staff, strength and conditioning staff, and sports nutrition staff. Coordinate and supervise medical services with the athletic training aids, team physicians and paramedic services for practices and home competition. Must be well versed in the use of current manual therapy, modality and rehabilitation equipment and techniques and utilize as needed using clinical judgement. Provide daily instruction and specific work assignments relating to pre-practice, practice, post-practice and athletic team competition needs to athletic training aids and student managers as assigned. Collaborate with the strength and conditioning staff, sports nutrition staff and sport coaching staff in developing reconditioning, performance and wellness programming. Collaborate with the Director of Sports Medicine to provide yearly physical examinations for incoming student-athletes. Coordination and transportation of student-athletes to and from physician appointments. Assist in coordination of insurance information and coverage between student-athletes, insurance coordinator and providers. Knowledge of concussion testing and evaluations as it relates to the health of male and female student-athletes and utilize as needed utilizing clinical judgement in coordination with medical supervision. Assist in the daily operation and maintenance of athletic training facilities. Mentor, advise, and provide professional guidance to graduate assistants, interns, and athletic training aids as it relates to professional development. Maintain working relationship with McKinley Health Center. Maintain appropriate Occupational and Safety, Health Administration (OSHA) guidelines for the DIA Sports Medicine Department. Maintain NATABOC certification and state licensure through regular attendance of continuing educational programs and compliance of continuing educational requirements established by the National Athletic Trainers Association Board of Certification (NATA-BOC). Assist the Director of Sports Medicine with the review of all policy and procedures for Sports Medicine Department. Review, evaluate and make recommendations to the Director of Sports Medicine on an ongoing basis relative to policies, procedures and health care issues for the student-athletes. Recruitment, education and supervision of athletic training aides, volunteers and work-study students. Maintain knowledge of and compliance with specific NCAA, Big Ten Conference, and institution rules that relate to this position.
Minimum of two years’ experience as a certified athletic trainer required. High moral and ethical standards.
Three to five years of certified athletic training experience preferred. Experience in a collegiate setting preferred.
Professional requirements: Certification by National Athletic Trainers Association Board of Certification (NATABOC), and continued compliance of continuing education requirements established by the NATABOC. Licensed, or licensure eligible, by the State of Illinois, by the Department of Professional Regulation
