Departmental Overview The Graduate School of Journalism at U.C. Berkeley is widely regarded as one of the top journalism programs in the United States. The School offers a two-year Master of Journalism degree to an enrollment of about 120 students at a time, while the summer-only journalism minor serves another 300 undergraduates. The school's emphasis is on mastering a wide variety of communication techniques while learning the highest standards of responsible and enterprising journalism. There are 9 Senate faculty members in the School and many working journalists who serve as lecturers. The School employs an average of 20 temporary and career staff members.
The Assistant Dean for Advancement leads an Advancement team to design, develop, deliver, and administer fundraising programs for the School. Taking direction from the Dean, the incumbent manages, cultivates and stewards a portfolio of 60-80 major gift prospects; identifies and cultivates new major gift prospects through researching background information; with the support of the advancement team, develops materials, marketing plans, and organizes related programs/events; establishes a strategic plan for meeting annual fundraising goals; partners with the dean to pursue major gifts by meeting with donors and supporters of the School; engages School's advisory board members in a systematic way to gain support for fundraising campaigns; writes proposals for solicitation of individual, corporate, and/or foundation prospects. The incumbent provides advice and guidance for contract and grant acquisition, gifts-in-kind, faculty engagement in advancement, and alumni engagement.
Assignments require managing a fundraising staff comprised of both professionals and related administrative support.
Selects, trains, mentors, guides and directs subordinate staff and as required, takes corrective action.
Manages the comprehensive fundraising program for the School of Journalism.
Conceives, creates, develops, implements and manages fundraising programs and strategies to successfully meet predetermined goals and objectives, and ensures that predetermined fundraising goals are met.
Evaluates programs using financial feasibility studies and market research, including planning and evaluating annual solicitation programs and making recommendations for improvements.
Conducts and participates in long and short-range strategic planning.
Oversees and manages the identification, cultivation and solicitation of donors and donor prospects.
Makes at least 10 - 15 substantive contacts per month (e.g., significant moves that advance a relationship).
Meets regularly with campus portfolio manager, attends all campus fundraiser meetings.
Manages other external relations functions, such as volunteers, outreach, et cetera.
Strong knowledge of all aspects of fundraising, donor and public relations, including strategies for donor identification, cultivation and solicitation.
Strong knowledge of applicable laws, rules, regulations, policies, et cetera.
Strong knowledge of the campus, its achievements, vision, mission, goals, objectives, applicable policies, infrastructure, and current issues of concern.
Strong knowledge of management/leadership concepts, principles and best practices.
Strong leadership/management skills to select, train, mentor, evaluate and motivate staff.
Strong written, oral and interpersonal communications skills and political acumen to establish and maintain good working relationships within all organizational levels and with outside constituencies.
Strong skills to meet predetermined goals and objectives, including securing gifts and meeting fundraising goals.
Strong strategic planning skills and skills to conceive, design, implement, evaluate and manage fundraising programs and strategies.
