About Missoula Urban Transportation District (Mountain Line)
he Missoula Urban Transportation District (MUTD) was founded in 1976 and is governed by a seven-member board of directors appointed by the city council and county commissioners, and currently has 72 employees.
Operated by MUTD, Mountain Line provides zero-fare fixed-route and paratransit bus service in and around Missoula and the University of Montana, helping employees get to work, students get to school, and keeping seniors and people with disabilities active and mobile. The highly successful zero-fare program—implemented in 2015—has increased bus ridership in Missoula by 70 percent in four years, with the agency now providing more than 1.5 million rides annually, and has put Missoula’s bus transit system on the map nationally. Behind the numbers, real people are benefiting every day from the program, garnering monumental community-wide support.
Today the Mountain Line system operates 24 buses on 12 routes and 11 paratransit vehicles that serve the community. Mountain Line was recently awarded a $500,000 Low-No Emissions grant and a $2.7 million discretionary Bus and Bus Facilities grant to fund the purchase of six new electric buses and a system-wide Bus Stop Master Plan, ...with upgrades coming to many bus stops this year, benefiting more than half of Mountain Line’s daily riders. Mountain Line plans to convert the entire fleet to electric buses as funds become available.
In 2018, MUTD also completed the Strategic Plan and is in the final stages of completing the Facilities Master Plan to address growth and identify potential locations for an expanded facility. The plan seeks to triple facility size by 2030.
