NC State invites applications and nominations for the Assistant Vice Chancellor for Principal Gifts (AVC), a newly created position that will report to the Vice Chancellor for University Advancement, Brian Sischo, and serve as a member of University Advancement’s senior leadership team. The AVC is charged with developing and implementing comprehensive strategies to identify, cultivate and solicit individuals with a capacity to make contributions of $1 million or more to NC State. He/she will work to enhance the level of engagement of these individuals with the University and create gift opportunities based on institutional priorities.
In close partnership with the Chancellor, Vice Chancellor, Deans, and development leaders and colleagues across the University, the AVC will coordinate fundraising strategies that include solicitations and determining appropriate recognition and stewardship plans. He/she will ensure that the University as a whole is maximizing philanthropic support from past, current and prospective principal gift supporters. In addition to engaging prospects managed by colleagues in colleges/units, the AVC will be responsible for building a donor pipeline through discovery and qualification and for managing a portfolio of principal gift prospects with annual goals for activity and results.
The AVC will liaison with other Advancement units that play a role in the development of principal gifts, such as Advancement Services and University Communications and Marketing, as well as units and teams that provide ongoing support to the process. This includes the development and coordination of a comprehensive university-wide principal gift proposal pipeline and manages the pipeline focused on ensuring campaign fundraising goals are met.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities Include:
Create and grow a pipeline of leadership ($1 Million+) and principal gift prospects ($5 Million+) through identification, qualification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship cycles that will lead to transformational gifts for NC State
Conduct personal meetings with prospects and donors throughout the year and lead/participate in solicitations with university leaders and development colleagues to achieve institutional goals
Raise donor sights, articulate aspirational goals and ideas, set priorities, and effectively present philanthropic opportunities
Work collaboratively with deans, senior administrators, and faculty to understand the programs and priorities within the University to facilitate the translation of priorities into fundraising opportunities and to foster broad, coordinated involvement and cooperation in all fundraising efforts
Foster and reinforce a non-territorial, sophisticated approach to donor-centric philanthropy that encourages flexibility and responsiveness
Oversee the preparation of funding proposals, talking points and strategies, assessments of potential support, briefings for senior officers and trustees, and stewardship reports for all assigned principal gift prospects
Serve as a resource, role model and coach to development staff on matters of prospect strategy and solicitation; offer new approaches and techniques
Ensure that all interested parties (team members) are well informed and engaged in efforts focused on specific prospects
Assist the Vice Chancellor with the engagement of members of the University Advancement Committee of the Board of Trustees, and the NC State University Foundation, Inc.
Coordinate activities and stewardship efforts with the Vice Chancellor’s Chief of Staff, appropriate project managers in University Advancement and other campus colleagues
Extensive travel is required to develop and advance relationships with principal prospects
Attend a variety of events throughout the year
Regular travel and occasional night and weekend work is required
Relevant post-baccalaureate degree required with eight years or greater experience in institutional advancement; will accept a relevant undergraduate degree and ten years of experience as described above in substitution. Degrees must be from appropriately accredited institutions.
Five or more years of direct experience and a track record of success soliciting and closing seven-figure gifts.

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education:
Master’s degree from an accredited college or university
Comprehensive campaign experience
Ten or more years of experience in higher education fundraising
Experience negotiating and closing eight-figure gifts
An understanding of the land grant, research Tier One university environment
Familiarity with NC State University
