Sport Psychologist The University of Delaware Newark, Delaware
The Sports Psychologist is an employee of CCSD to be embedded in the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics, where 90% of their responsibilities will be performed. This position reports to the Director of Counseling and Student Development and the Senior Associate Director of Athletics, Sports Performance.
As a member of the University of Delaware Sports Performance Team, The Sports Psychologist is a valued member of our multidisciplinary Sports Performance healthcare team, upholding and embracing the departmental mission of “Inspiring Greatness Together.” The position will support the department’s vision of providing an excellent student-athlete experience and foster a commitment to diversity and inclusiveness throughout the program.
The Sports Psychologist is responsible for growth and development of the sports psychology program, which includes; providing counseling and sport psychology services to our 21 varsity programs, consulting with our coaches and staff members, developing and presenting workshops for multiple audiences.
Major Responsibilities: Clinical Responsibilities 60%
Individual sport psychology strategies related to sport and performance specific skills, and mental health crisis intervention.
Consultation and outreach on clinical areas specific to student-athletes (e.g. transition to the university, injury, disordered eating, athletic identity, career planning and transition, interpersonal relationships, cultural identity, and substance abuse).
Professional consultation to UD coaches, staff, sports medicine colleagues, and student-athletes regarding student behavior, mental health, performance enhancement counseling and education.
Educational Programming 25%
Develop and present various workshops for multiple audiences including but not limited to individual teams, all student athletes, coaches and staff members.
Lead educational sessions for coaches, staff, and student-athletes related to best practices and industry leading programming.
Lead the #HenMinded Student-Athlete group – focusing on raising mental health awareness and stigma reduction amongst Student-Athletes.
Coordination of WellTrack programming – a web-based app used for mental health screening and as a resource tool for Student-Athletes used in part to adhere to NCAA standards around mental health screening for all athletes.
Management /Administrative 15%
Maintenance of written records within Titanium according to the standards and procedures of the CCSD and ethical guidelines.
Attend staff meetings, professional development and retreats for CCSD and Athletics.
Management and clinical supervision of the post-doctoral fellow.
Member of the leadership team for Sport Performance that creates strategies around Sport Performance team goals and functions.
Participation in CARE meetings – a collaborative meeting between all Sport Performance areas, Academics & Head Coaches focusing on Student-Athlete action items to holistically improve performance in the classroom, community and competitive arena.
Participation in Student Life mtgs – identifying at risk Student-Athletes.
Doctoral degree in Clinical, Counseling, or Educational Psychology. A minimum of two years postdoctoral experience is required.
Current certification as a Sports Psychologist preferred or specialized training in sport psychology and/or AASP certification.
Current state licensure or eligible for state license upon hire.
Excellent personal qualities and skills (e.g. oral and written communication, organizational, interpersonal, and analytical) that enable effective interaction with athletic staff, sport medicine staff, colleagues, administrators, faculty and student-athletes.
Strong commitment to, and training in, working with culturally diverse individuals.
Self-motivated and disciplined, flexible and able to respond well to change and to intervene in mental health crises.
Ability to work within a multidisciplinary treatment team and to case manage referrals to campus and community partners.
Knowledge of NCAA, CAA, and industry rules and regulations.
Maintain industry standard certifications, licensure, CEU’s, etc.
Experience working with Division I collegiate (and/or elite) athletes.
APA-accredited doctoral training program and internship preferred.
AASP certified as Certified Mental Performance Consultant (CMPC) preferred.
Training and experience in LD/ADHD evaluation and assessment preferred.
Training and experience in alcohol and substance abuse assessment and treatment preferred.
Experience with clinical mental health programming for student-athletes and coaches preferred.
Experience working in a multidisciplinary healthcare team preferred.
Experience with Titanium Software System preferred.
Flexible work schedule required. Position may require early mornings, evening, and weekend hours.
