The Executive Director reports directly to a Board of Directors. The Executive Director shall have responsibility for the staff structure; meeting planning and operations; educational publications; professional development and training; legal issues; fundraising; financial, administrative, and real estate management; technology planning, design, and implementation; and relationship management with strategic partners, sponsors, and external stakeholders. They shall be responsible for the management of the physical office and staff of the organization, consistent with adopted management policies.
The Executive Director shall oversee the preparation of the annual budget, which shall be reviewed and approved by Board. They shall have signatory powers and shall maintain and have custody of the financial books and other records of the organization. Such records shall be subject to annual audit. The Executive Director shall have the authority to hire, promote, transfer, and terminate staff, and shall enter into such agreements as may be necessary to carry out the activities of the organization. They shall be responsible for maintaining positive, proactive relationships with strategic partners, as appropriate.
The Executive Director oversees the operations, fosters member engagement and growth, and executes the strategic direction as approved by the Board. Key responsibilities, consistent with association management generally, include:
Leadership and Management:
In collaboration with the Board of Directors and staff, develop, plan, and implement strategies, objectives, programs, and initiatives that deliver on SPA’s core purpose, strategic goals, and priorities, including governance structure reform.
Ensure the organization is financially sound.
Attract, retain, and develop a highly motivated, talented workforce.
Provide a team-oriented and motivational leadership style that enhances the effectiveness of the staff.
Professional Learning and Development:
Engages volunteers and staff to oversee the development of learning resources, tools and activities to enhance the membership’s expertise and practice.
Reviews professional development programs and activities in light of current and future trends.
Works with volunteer leaders and staff to ensure the success of the annual convention.
Engage student, alumni and professional networks; develop and maintain relationships with key influencers and organizations who can aid SPA in expanding its mission and presence.
In coordination with the SPA Foundation as necessary, play a critical role in establishing fundraising and funding strategies that target and engage key constituents in SPA’s work and mission.
Monitors agencies and policy issues to ensure a proactive role in influencing policy that could affect SPA, its members and the profession.
Encourages and leverages, with appropriate resources, member engagement in advocacy efforts aligned with SPA goals.
Oversees development of SPA communications strategies related to advocacy matters.
Finance and Operations:
Oversees day-to-day operations and is responsible for establishing and implementing operating and financial objectives, policies, procedures and reporting.
Marketing and Public Relations:
Act as a principal spokesperson for SPA, overseeing efforts to enhance organizational visibility and awareness.
Modernize SPA’s communication strategy.
Ensure that all web, social media, and Exchange Newsletter content is accurate and posted in a timely fashion.
Identify, negotiate and maintain current vendor/software contracts in coordination with Board to support communication and publishing activities.
Strengthen the recruitment and retention of members.
Maximize engagement of members through events and member programs.
Ensure that SPA offers engaging and innovative opportunities that provide depth of learning experiences and with distinct unique value.
Meeting and Event Support:
Manage all aspects of SPA’s annual onsite conference and other events, including but not limited to securing conference and event exhibitors/sponsors, assisting conference and event participants with registration, managing pre-registration and on-site registration for conference and events, collect CEU information and provide certification to attendees, and providing post conference and event evaluations.
Serve in an advisory capacity to event chairs and association leadership, communicating event logistics to committee/event chairs, members and participants.
Identify and negotiate conference and event site contracts in coordination with SPA leadership.
To be successful, the Executive Director will need to have a combination of leadership experience in either a nonprofit organization, professional association, or an educational setting with a focus on assessment psychology or a related field. Specific qualifications include:
Bachelor’s degree required. Master’s degree and/or equivalent credentials or work experience preferred.
Experience with governance in a nonprofit association.
Experience with senior management, ability to handle multiple goals, success in supervising and developing staff.
