Georgetown Day School opened its doors in 1945 as the first integrated school in a segregated city. Governed by a Board of Trustees elected by the parent body and administered by an appointed Head of School, it was founded by seven families who wanted to create a school committed not only to academic excellence and educational innovation but also to a value system emphasizing appreciation and respect for others. Believing that diversity was the ground out of which all deep and rich learning occurs, they established a school where all children would be welcome, celebrated, and challenged to be their best selves.
Today, the School's philosophy, programs, and position in the national educational landscape strongly reflect its roots. Having grown from 12 children in 1945 to 1075 students in PK-12 today, GDS is recognized as one of Washington, D.C.’s and the nation’s most dynamic educational institutions.
Georgetown Day School is hiring a Chief Advancement Officer to oversee all aspects of the School’s philanthropic support, community relations, alumni engagement and communications. The ideal candidate is a visionary leader with demonstrated experience building successful fundraising programs and managing high-performing teams. As the School prepares to celebrate its 75th anniversary and the opening of its unified campus in 2020, the Chief Advancement Officer will be a critical member of the senior leadership and work in close collaboration with the Head of School, Associate Head of School, and Board of Trustees to engage all members of the community during this exciting time. As a key ambassador of the School, the Chief Advancement Officer must fully embrace and represent GDS’s mission.
Advancing GDS’s mission, communications, and brand
Develop a strong understanding of GDS’ unique history, culture, and mission;
Represent the School, its mission and values well in all settings and at all times;
Work closely with the Head of School and communications staff to define how key strategic messages will be delivered to various constituencies to increase their understanding of GDS’s brand, identity, and mission;
Oversee the regular communications of the School with its alumni and donors through publications and social media;
Strong, trusted relationships with key stakeholders
Build a strong working relationship with the Head of School and Board of Trustees, gaining their trust and confidence; provide them with timely advice and counsel in all advancement, community engagement, and communications areas;
Help identify and recruit qualified candidates for election to the Board;
Assessment, visioning, and strategic planning
Listen and learn from existing programs and infrastructure to identify strengths and prioritize opportunities for improvement;
Lead key stakeholders through a visioning and strategic planning process to determine the best future path for the School’s philanthropic, community engagement, and communications initiatives;
Team leadership and accountability
Manage the Advancement team to achieve this new vision and strategy by establishing clear objectives, providing necessary resources and coaching, and holding individuals and teams accountable;
Meet regularly with each member of the Advancement team to establish specific job responsibilities, evaluate job performance, and set objectives for improvement;
Manage, mentor, train, and, as necessary, help recruit professional and administrative staff associated with Advancement and external relations activities;
Identify and manage the cultivation and solicitation of leadership prospects for the Annual Fund and gifts to support the School’s operations;
Identify and manage the cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of all major gifts for campaigns and capital projects;
Support and enhance the process by which a steady source of donor prospects are identified, researched, and qualified for the appropriate level of cultivation and solicitation;
Oversee the successful implementation of on-campus and off-campus events throughout the year;
Effectively manage an operating budget within guidelines as established.

Knowledgeable about contemporary development theory and practice, and passionate about his/her profession;
Strong financial competence in budgeting and revenue goal setting;
A working knowledge of donor database and office programs, preferably Raiser’s Edge, Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
