DESCRIPTION: Humboldt State University's Athletics Department invites applicants for a 10-month full-time temporary position as Head Coach of Women's Rowing. This is an annual appointment. Subsequent reappointment is contingent upon successful evaluation, performance, budget, programmatic need, and NCAA and conference compliance. January 2020 start is preferred; however the start date is negotiable.
PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS: An earned bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university is required at the time of appointment.
The successful candidate must demonstrate the following:
Minimum of three (3) years of rowing coaching experience;
A valid driver's license and good driving record;
Extensive nautical skills relating to navigation, motor boat driving, anticipating weather changes to ensure safety of the team, general as well as rowing specific boating safety, marine engine knowledge, rowing equipment maintenance and repair;
Knowledge of NCAA rules and regulations regarding student athletes;
Strong verbal and written communication skills;
Excellent interpersonal skills;
Ability to demonstrate leadership and sound decision making;
Commitment to the academic success of student athletes;
Commitment to and/or experience promoting and fostering a learning environment that is supportive of individuals from diverse backgrounds.
Preferred qualifications for this position include:
Master's degree from an accredited college or university;
Seven (7) or more years of rowing coaching experience;
Comprehensive and demonstrated knowledge of NCAA rules and regulations;
Demonstrated success in recruiting, retaining and graduating student-athletes;
Demonstrated success and experience in fundraising;
General administrative skills including staff oversight and budgeting practices;
Recruiting experience on the West Coast/NCAA West Region;
Experience interacting with a variety of constituents, public relations experience including public speaking, granting press interviews and public appearances on radio and television;
Strong team management skills, and ability to be a positive motivator;
Ability to clearly articulate a coherent plan and vision to build and enhance the Humboldt State University Women's Rowing program.

Professional Duties: The professional responsibilities of this position are to oversee the organization and administration of all phases of the Humboldt State University Women's Rowing program, including:
Ensuring that all relevant institutional, CCAA and NCAA rules and regulations are followed including, but not limited to: player eligibility, recruiting, financial student aid, scheduling and academic progress.
Coordinating and overseeing the recruitment of all quality athletes capable of pursuing the baccalaureate degree in accordance with the rules and regulations of the governing bodies and in such a manner that reflects the best interests of the program and the university.
Participating in annual continuing education pertaining to NCAA rules.
Designing a competitive schedule that maximizes athlete development and performances.
Relating in a positive and effective manner with officials, opponents' coaching staff, high school coaches, parents, media and the public.
Demonstrating sincere interest and provide strong leadership in the personal, athletics, and academic development of student athletes.
Participating in the formulation of budgets and ensure that the women's rowing program operates within the approved budgetary parameters.
Responsible for ordering all equipment and uniforms.
Providing information relating to the accomplishments and endeavors of the team and individual team members to the Assistant Athletic Director of Media Relations.
Assisting the Director of Athletics and the Head Athletics Trainer with administering the athletics insurance program by:
Ensuring that each participant has a physician's clearance prior to any participation.
Submitting a team roster and any changes that occur, for insurance purposes.
Ensuring that all injured players receive proper medical care and rehabilitation.
Ensuring that all official documents have been signed and returned to the Sports Medicine office prior to any participation.
Assisting the Compliance Coordinator in preparing eligibility documentation by submitting an accurate and complete roster well in advance of the first playing date or scrimmage.
Establishing a vision for the program; plan, prepare and execute practice and race plans, strategies and alternatives which are designed to bring success to the program.
Submitting travel/transportation requests.
Maintaining a positive image in the community and with donors, as well as maintaining a positive relationship with the University community.
Providing lead oversight, development, and participate in evaluation of staff.
Loading and driving super-duty trucks while towing rowing trailers.
Transporting athletes to practice and competition sites.
Transporting rowing equipment to practice and competition sites.
Performing other related duties as assigned by the Director of Athletics.
