Saint Joseph’s College of Maine seeks nominations and applications for the position of Associate Vice President & Chief Athletics and Recreation Officer (CARO).
In addition to providing direction to the College’s outstanding DIII athletics program, the CARO will have the opportunity to develop and work to realize the next strategic plan for athletics and recreation for Saint Joseph’s College of Maine (SJCME). The CARO will report directly to the College President and will be a member of the College’s Leadership Team.
The Monks of Saint Joseph’s College of Maine are preparing to celebrate the 50th anniversary of athletics at the College during the 2020-2021 academic year. The College currently has 21 NCAA DIII varsity teams, having added Women’s and Men’s Alpine Skiing during the 2019-20 academic year. Athletics and recreation are a central component of the Saint Joseph’s College experience, with more than one third of our campus-based undergraduates involved in our DIII program. The CARO will provide visionary leadership and administrative direction while overseeing all intercollegiate programs, facilities and activities and is responsible for ensuring compliance with all federal, divisional and college athletics regulations. With an operating budget of $2.3M, the CARO administers departmental funds and accounts. The CARO develops short-term goals and long term strategic plan and vision for the department and oversees departmental fundraising and public relations. The CARO also serves as the Emergency Coordinator for the Athletics department.
In addition to leading our intercollegiate varsity sports program, the CARO is expected to be a champion and partner with key constituents on campus for the integration and coordination of all athletics and recreation activities at the College to include the College’s club sports, intramural and recreation programs, and outreach to the local community. Current examples include: 1). the two local school districts who are active users of our athletics facilities, including the use of our pool as the “home” for their swim teams; and 2). the College’s programs on Integrative Aging. Our work with area senior citizens in an active Silver Sneakers exercise and fitness program creates an opportunity to make athletics and recreation a particular point of focus of the College’s commitment to creating and nurturing a vibrant multi- and inter-generational learning community.
Education and Experience -Bachelor’s degree is required; Master’s degree in athletic administration or related field is preferred. -5 – 8 or more years of relevant and progressive administrative and leadership experience in intercollegiate or professional athletics; Prior coaching experience preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities -Knowledge of and commitment to the College Mission, Core Values and the Catholic, Mercy tradition with an appreciation and respect for the liberal arts education -Knowledge of NCAA DIII athletics and its rules and regulations -Visionary leadership and managerial skills to support the student-athlete and campus recreation experience -Skilled at managing complex and highly visible athletic and active recreational programs -Proven ability to lead seasoned professionals as well as less experienced staff -Ability to develop long range strategic plans for athletic programs and athletic facilities -Demonstrated ability to foster an environment of diversity, equity and inclusion -Proven ability to fundraise, generate revenue, and promote capital campaigns -Financial acumen skills to develop and manage a large operating budget -Proven training, coaching and mentoring abilities -Strong organizational, interpersonal, analytical and problem solving skills -Proven ability to collaborate to foster and maintain effective working relationships with a variety people -Ability to be confident, humble, accountable and transparent -Strong verbal and written communication skills as well as outstanding interpersonal skills are also needed. -Effective presentation skills and speaking to large audiences -Computer competence in word processing, power point presentations, database management and electronic mail -Strong work ethic -Availability for a flexible schedule and the ability to travel -Must be adaptable, creative and be able to handle many projects at once -Knowledge of general office operations -Sense of humor -Must have a valid driver’s license -Tolerates work related stress effectively and maintains self-control/professionalism
Supervision and Scheduling Demands Full-time, 12 month administrative staff position with moderate supervision. Evening, nighttime, and weekend hours are expected with attending athletic contests and campus events. Travel for fundraising is required up to 20% of the time. Travel is primarily in the Northeast Region, between Maine and Washington DC, with a focus in the State of Maine and the greater Boston area. Occasional domestic travel within the United States.
