GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF POSITION: The Sports Information Director is responsible for the overall administration of sports information, communication and promotion for Pacific University’s Athletic Department, including all varsity and junior varsity programs.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
Media Relations – Serve as primary media contact for Pacific Athletics.
Establish and foster relationships with sports reporters from the Oregonian, Forest Grove News-Times, Hillsboro Argus and other organizations.
Produce and disseminate press releases for each in-season sport.
Produce and disseminate special releases for coaching milestones, coaching changes, etc.
Produce hometown releases to promote achievements of athletes.
Write athletics related summaries and features for University publications including the Alumni Magazine and quarterly newsletter for our booster club.
Arrange and coordinate interviews with players and coaches.
Provide media passes and media seating upon request for athletic events.
Statistics – Serve as the statistician for all sports.
Compile statistics for all in-season sports following events.
Release statistics on weekly basis and as requested by coaches.
Reports statistics as required to Northwest Conference and NCAA.
Compile and maintain historical data and all-time statistics and records for all sports.
Compile official rosters for all sports.
Game management – Hire and supervise staff to provide game management for volleyball, soccer, basketball, football, swimming, lacrosse, golf, wrestling, track & field, baseball, and softball.
Supervise game staff (scorekeeper, scoreboard operator, shot clock operator, announcer, computer statistician, video board production).
Provide adequate training for game management staff in both equipment operation and use of statistical software.
Web site – Maintain and update Pacific’s Athletic Web site and social media sites.
Provide content for Web site and social media sites.
Update sites with game recap and statistics after every home event.
Develop relationship with the Marketing and Communications office and work with them in keeping sites in line with University policy and style.
Publications – Publish media guide for football and game day programs for other varsity sports as appropriate.
Aid with individual teams in producing publications, such as camp brochures and newsletters.
Help to coordinate and publish seasonal sports schedules and postcards for booster club events.
Recruiting – Responsible for the compilation and publishing of Athletic Department fact sheets.
Work with University Relations on design of sheets.
Work with Enrollment Management and Assistant Director of Athletics on content.
Promotions – Coordinate promotion of athletic events both on campus and in community; mainly through the use of social media.
Post scores and upcoming event notices on our social media sites.
Develop and execute in-game promotions and contests.
Act as the staff advisor to the student lead Red Den club.
Awards and honors – Coordinate Hall of Fame nominations for the Hall of Fame selection committee and lead organization of the Hall of Fame event.
Coordinate end of the year Boxer Awards and assist with organization of the SAAC year-end banquet.
Assist coaches and administration in nominating athletes for regional and national recognition.
Provide information and data for Boxer Club Student-Athlete of the month.
Administration – Maintain office operating and work study budgets. Develop relationships with Northwest Conference SID and fellow professionals at sister schools.
Must maintain working knowledge and follow all Northwest Conference and NCAA rules.
SECONDARY FUNCTIONS: Other duties as assigned by the Director of Athletics or Associate Director of Athletics.
SUPERVISOR RESPONSIBILITY: The Sports Information Director will report directly to the Director of Athletics. The Sports Information Director will be responsible for direct supervision of all work-study students.
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
A Bachelor's Degree is required. Two years in Sports Information or a related field (Journalism, Communications or Broadcasting) is required. The successful candidate should possess a broad knowledge of athletics, sports statistics and NCAA rules and procedures. Skills in photography, social media and broadcasting are a plus.
Knowledge of Macintosh and PC platforms is required. Microsoft Word and InDesign is essential in addition to knowledge of StatCrew and website maintenance. Graphic design is a plus. Salary will commensurate with experience.
