Director of Student-Athlete Welfare and Athletic Counseling
Lee University, an NCAA Division II institution and member of the Gulf South Conference, is currently accepting applications for a Director of Student-Athlete Welfare and Athletic Counseling. This individual will serve as a mid-level administrator and will have supervision and oversight of student-athlete welfare and the Athletic Counseling Program. The successful candidate must have a strong commitment to the mission of Lee University. This full-time position will report to the Associate Athletic Director of Internal Affairs.
Responsibilities of the Director of Student-Athlete Welfare and Athletic Counseling Administrative Duties ?Oversight of Student-Athlete Welfare and Athletic Counseling Budget. ?Coordinate and supervise the delivery of Athletic Counseling Program services to nearly 300 student-athletes. ?Lead the Student-Athlete Care Team. ?Develop and update all policies and procedures for the Athletic Counseling Program. ?Serve as the liaison between the Athletic Department and the Lee University Counseling Center, Lee University Student Development Sector, and Lee University Student Success (The HUB).
Departmental Liaison: Specific duties include, but are not limited to: ?Serving as the departmental liaison to Student Development, Student Success (The HUB), Counseling Center, and Student Health Center.
Create and establish the Athletic Counseling Program: ?This position will be responsible for establishing all policies and procedures related to the Athletic Counseling Position. ?Build relationships with the Lee sport medicine staff, coaching staff and student-athletes. Generate cross campus connections with Lee University Student Development, Lee University Counseling Center, and Lee University Student Success. Create and oversee the Student-Athlete Care Team.
Clinical Counseling: ?Meet individually with Lee student-athletes who are struggling with personal and mental health problems that are interfering with their ability to be successful academically and athletically. The problems may include, but are not limited to, depression, anxiety disorders, eating disorders, relationship problems, anger management problems, grief and bereavement issues, and developmental problems. Referrals will also be made to other medical and psychological providers as needed. ?Serve as the liaison between the Athletic Department and the Lee University Counseling Center.
Athletic Counseling - Performance Enhancement Interventions & Team Building: ?Meet individually with Lee student-athletes to educate, motivate, and help them implement mental training strategies that will allow them to perform at their optimal level. ?Consult with coaches about how to work best with individual team members and the entire team. ?Provide team building activities and discussions that help teams become more cohesive and perform better.
Student-Athlete Crises Management & Career Ending Injuries: ?Consult regularly with Lee University athletic trainers and sports medicine personnel. ?Provide psychological interventions to assist student-athletes in their recovery from injury, illness, or other medical problems. ?Provide psychological interventions to assist student-athletes who are in a state of crisis. Referrals will also be made to other medical and psychological providers as needed.
Diversity & Inclusion: ?Work closely with the Student Success Center (The HUB) to ensure student-athletes, staff, and coaches understand and best utilize the resources available to them. ?Work with the Athletic Title IX deputy and the university Title IX Coordinator to provide Title IX and gender equity education and training for student-athletes, coaches and athletic staff members. ?Coordinate and implement diversity and inclusion initiatives throughout the athletic department. ?Serve on the Athletic Diversity and Inclusion Committee.
Level of Skill Required for the Director of Student-Athlete Welfare and Athletic Counseling Minimum Qualifications ?M.A. in Counseling, Social Work, Psychology (or related field). ?Required TN license in respective field or license-eligible within 2 years of hire. ?Experience in clinical and performance counseling, teaching, and leadership development. ?Demonstrated commitment to academic interests and values and strong interpersonal skills. ?Ability to effectively network with student support services on campus and in the community.
Preferred Qualifications ?Former student-athlete or counseling related specific to student-athletes ?Experience with crisis intervention ?3-5 years experience in athletic counseling ?1-3 years experience as a department or clinical supervisor
