Reporting directly to the Vice President for Campus Life, The Director of Athletics will lead an intercollegiate and campus recreation program that challenges and develops the physical, mental, and personal abilities of student-athletes for 38 varsity sports; fosters the elements of integrity, sportsmanship and fair play; promotes physical fitness, sports participation and athletics excellence; engenders school spirit among students, faculty, staff, alumni, and friends; enhances the name of Princeton University; and generates revenues to help defray the costs of the athletics program, all while adhering to the policies of the Ivy League, ECAC, NCAA, and Princeton University.
Duties & Responsibilities:
•Provide visionary leadership and role modeling that strives for excellence in academics and athletics, while embracing equity in opportunity, good sportsmanship, and ethical conduct at all levels. •Actively support and advance the University’s commitment to ensuring a diverse, equitable and inclusive learning and working environment by continuing to create and implement new strategies to further increase the diversity of the student-athlete, coaching and administrative staff groups.
•Manage the intercollegiate athletics and campus recreational sports programs that report to the Director of Athletics and provide direction by setting goals to stimulate program development, developing and managing a complex budget, and participating in decision making processes to make hard decisions in a fair and equitable manner. •Build and maintain relationships with the Ivy League, ECAC, and the NCAA, and participate actively in league and conference meetings and activities.
•Collaborate with Campus Life and the Office of the General Counsel to oversee the administration of the intercollegiate athletics and campus recreation sports programs while maintaining accountability for its design, operation and evaluation, ensuring compliance with institutional, Ivy League, ECAC, NCAA, and state and federal laws and Title IX regulations, guidelines and requirements.
•Establish and maintain effective working relationships and communications with faculty, administrators, staff, student body, alumni, and the local community regarding intercollegiate athletics and campus recreation sports programs at Princeton University.
•Relate to and understand the passion for the student-athlete experience, with specific attention to recognizing that students must find a balance between athletic endeavors and academic success in a rigorous academic setting, while working with faculty/staff to support this commitment and develop the physical, mental, and personal abilities of all Princeton students.
•Actively contribute to university committees and campus discussions on a variety of student and institutional issues.
•Supervise all athletic staff; recruit, retain, develop, evaluate, and support the professional development of the administrative and coaching staffs in promoting their accomplishments, and establishing positive morale and relationships.
•Lead the development of intercollegiate athletics and campus recreation sports programs fundraising goals and strategies, and work closely with Development and the Office of Alumni Affairs to meet strategic needs and work with alumni, and the broader Princeton community to increase financial support for Princeton’s intercollegiate athletics and campus recreation sports programs.
•Possess high political and business acumen with the ability to navigate and manage the evolving landscape of collegiate athletics.
• Develop plans to enhance the revenue-generating capacity of the Athletics Department through the understanding the external functions of the department including fundraising, brand management, ticket selling, sponsorship, media and marketing.
A bachelor’s degree is required; advanced degree strongly preferred.
The successful candidate will have a demonstrated record of administrative leadership and accomplishment, of progressively responsible collegiate athletic administrative experience.
Ten years of experience in university or college sports programs, which includes managerial or supervisory experience, is preferred.
Candidates should demonstrate significant experience in strategic and financial planning.
Possess proven organizational, planning, supervisory and problem-solving skills.
Possess a commitment to diversity and to the development of an inclusive campus culture.
Ability to travel extensively during the season.
Possess creativity, flexibility, resilience, intelligence, patience, and a quick wit and sense of humor.
Possess a demonstrated commitment to the holistic academic and athletic development of the student-athlete within the context of a liberal arts education
