This position will develop and provide a comprehensive healthy choices program to serve all ECU student-athletes. This specifically includes the development and provision of all aspects of healthy eating, to include but not be limited to: the education of ECU student-athletes regarding healthy eating choices and collaboration with athletic trainers, strength and conditioning coaches, team physicians, and athletic administration.
Reporting to the Director of Strength and Conditioning, the individual serving in this position is responsible for, but not limited to, the following duties:
Develop a comprehensive wellness education and healthy choices program for ECU student-athletes in all sports.
Implement sports team nutritional plans, including consultation on team meals and fueling strategies based on schedule/activities.
Work with members of all coaching staffs, the strength and conditioning staff, the athletic training staff, team physicians and related student-athlete service providers to ensure a collaborative and comprehensive approach to training, nutrition and recovery.
Coordinate/manage quantity food production and distribution, such as developing and managing training table menus, catering, and meals during team travel.
Evaluate nutritional quality of refueling stations and recommend items providing a positive nutritional characteristic to refueling stations.
Develop and counsel in hydration protocols
Collaborate with athletic trainers, strength and conditioning coaches, and team physicians to research, evaluate, recommend, purchase, distribute and monitor permissible and effective nutritional supplements with attention to NCAA rules, regulations and nutrition related bylaws.
Address nutritional challenges to performance with special attention to food allergies, bone mineral density concerns, gastrointestinal disturbances, iron depletion or deficiency, Vitamin D deficiency, gluten intolerance, lactose intolerance and diabetes
Provide nutrition education and outreach to student-athletes including coordination of cooking classes, grocery store tours, dining hall tours, social-media and nutritional intervention
Utilize body composition and nutritional measurements to educate and evaluate student-athletes on maintaining proper body composition consistent with good health and peak performance, consistent with athletic department policy
Work with team physicians to recognize, evaluate and provide early intervention of disordered eating
Be willing to work early mornings, evenings, weekends and holidays as may be required by the particular demands of various sports
Work effectively with a culturally diverse community and advance the department’s commitment to diversity and inclusion
Perform duties with professional conduct, confidentiality, fiscal responsibility and a commitment to student-athlete well-being.
Abide by all written policies, procedures and guidelines of East Carolina University, the Department of Athletics, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), and all applicable conferences or associations.
Build quality relationships and work collaboratively and professionally with athletics, Pirate Club and University staff, students, and all constituencies and stakeholders.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Bachelor’s degree in health, nutrition, food system management or a related field and a minimum of two (2) years related experience
Registered Dietitian (Commission on Dietetic Registration)
Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of students, staff, and the general public.
Ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions.
Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
Qualifying degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions and conferred by the time of hire.
Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education
Master’s degree in a related field.
Board Certified Specialist in Sports Dietetics (CSSD) by the Commission on Dietetic Registration, or working towards Board Certification.
2 years’ experience working with active populations.
Licensed Dietitian (in State of North Carolina, or eligible for licensure upon hire).
