The University of Utah’s Athletics Department is seeking a strong leader and highly skilled Senior Associate AD to lead the Academic Services Unit while serving on the AD’s Cabinet and Senior Leadership team. The position will have a shared reporting responsibility outside of Athletics, to the Senior Associate VP of Academic Affairs/Dean of Undergraduate Studies to foster accountability and broaden relationships across the University of Utah Campus. Under the general supervision of the Deputy Athletics Director for Internal Operations/Chief Operating Officer, the Sr. Associate AD will operate with a high degree of autonomy while overseeing a professional team that provides industry leading academic services to over 500 student-athletes representing 20 varsity sport programs.
The successful applicant will provide strategic leadership and vision to a team of athletics academic advisors, learning specialists, and interns who are charged with providing academic advising, time/objective-based study hall, tutorial support, and learning support services. They must be able to articulate a clear vision for supporting student-athletes and coaches during the daily rigors and challenges that exist in an academic setting. The identified individual must operate with the utmost integrity relative to academia and NCAA rules and instill that culture amongst the academic support team through rigorous policy and procedure, ongoing education, mentoring, and professional development.
The position is responsible for hiring, supervising, training, and evaluating all members of the academic support team in the unit. The will enforce existing and creating new policies and procedures to protect, the Athletics Department and the University of Utah, against academic fraud and misconduct. Develop and implement strategies to enhance the retention and graduation success rates (GSR) of all student-athletes while developing strong relationships and utilizing campus partners. Working closely with the Faculty Athletics Representative, the successful candidate will strive to enhance the transparency and effectiveness with communication with faculty and academic units across campus.
Bachelor’s degree in Business or Public Administration, a related, or equivalency required; plus, six years of progressively more responsible management experience; and demonstrated leadership, human relations, and effective communication skills also required. Master’s degree in Business Administration or related field preferred.
