The Associate Athletics Director for Athletics Communications & Public Relations is responsible for oversight, development and implementation of media relations and publicity for the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics and Physical Education. The Associate Athletics Director for Athletics Communications serves as the executive producer of the Official Columbia Athletics Website.
Directing public relations, media relations, sports information, and feature stories in print and electronic media
Managing the day-to-day operations of athletics communications including maintenance of athletics’ website and archives for 31 varsity sports and area budget management
Supervising and managing up to six full-time employees and 30+ student workers, including hiring, training and scheduling
Working cooperatively with the Department administration in developing strategies, campaigns and implementing ideas for increasing publicity, media coverage, sports marketing, and fundraising initiatives
Serving as primary contact for www.gocolumbialions.com website, including (but not limited to): liaising with internet service provider, editing and design, feature development and e-commerce initiatives, writing and editing stories and information
Serving as executive editor of numerous departmental collaterals, including but not limited to newsletters, annual reports, e.g. Lions Den newsletter
Serving as the primary communications contact for the Director of Intercollegiate Athletics and Physical Education, the Football Program and other select sports programs
Developing and implementing media relations plan for assigned sports programs to attain and maintain positive exposure for Columbia Athletics and Columbia Lions student-athletes, with responsibilities including (but not limited to): pitching stories to appropriate media outlets, tracking and clipping media mentions, following up with media contacts, coordinating with university resources as necessary
Writing, editing and publishing print materials including (but not limited to): media guides, press releases, contest programs, contest recaps and feature stories for assigned sports programs
Creating and implementing crisis communication plans, both unilaterally and in collaboration with University Public Affairs
Managing media relations and statistical services at home events for more than 120 home contests annually
Traveling with assigned sports programs (when necessary) to support media relations, and publicity efforts
Working closely with and supporting the Senior Associate Athletic Director for External Operations, the Executive Vice-President for Communications & External Affairs, and the Director of Intercollegiate Athletics and Physical Education in an effort to build the Columbia Athletics’ brand to the media, campus and local community
Ensuring nomination of Columbia student-athletes in assigned sports programs for appropriate honors and awards (Council of Ivy League Presidents, NCAA, All-America, etc.)
Acting as mentor to Assistant Director for Sports Information/Media Relations and other staff members
Developing and maintaining relationships with media professionals, alumni, friends, fans, support groups and University personnel
Exhibiting the highest professional standards and ethical behavior with adherence to NCAA, Council of Ivy League Presidents, University, and the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics and Physical Education rules and regulations
Contributing to the maintenance of good working relationships with all members of the Department
Assuming other responsibilities as assigned by the Senior Associate Athletic Director for External Operations
Exhibiting the highest professional standards and ethical behavior with regard to adherence to NCAA, Council of Ivy League Presidents, University, and the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics and Physical Education rules and regulations and/ or Code of Ethics
Bachelor’s degree required.
5 – 7 years of related experience
Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communication or related public relations field required.
Strong verbal and written communication skills.
Must demonstrate excellent writing and computer skills: familiarity with appropriate software including Adobe Creative Suite, Stat crew Final Cut Pro or equivalent video editing software and Microsoft Office; ability to work in a fast-paced environment; working knowledge of concepts and principles of news, media communications and media relations office or related field.
Successful background in dealing with print and electronic media.
Experience in designing, writing and editing press releases and publications preferably in athletics.
Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
