Syracuse University invites applicants for the Senior Associate Director Sports Medicine position. This position will provide supervision and administrative oversight to the sports performance team. Oversee athletics health care administration and delivery within the sports performance team and serve as the designated athletics health care administrator. This position will make sure all services and activities are following NCAA policies, practices, and guidelines relating to student-athlete health and safety. This position will provide direct oversight on all aspects of staff in the program. This would include, strength and conditioning, sports medicine, sports psychology, team physicians, and nutrition directors.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Work closely with the sports medicine department, team physicians, and the Director of Athletics or designee to implement policies, protocols, and practices that best serve student-athletes.
Develop a vision and plan for engagement within the sports performance team. The sports performance team is comprised of sports medicine, athletic training, strength and conditioning, sports psychology, (including mental health, counseling, and sports nutrition), and oversees athletics health care and administration.
Provide administrative oversight and supervision as well as create and maintain a collaborative culture and productive work environment for the sports performance team. Ensure all members of the sports performance team are working together efficiently, effectively, and using consistent practices and standard operating procedures across all sports to provide exceptional healthcare services to all student-athletes with the common goal of safety and well-being.
Lead and ensure coordination of program design and implementation of sport specific strength and conditioning programs as well as athletic training care and prevention and rehabilitation programs for all varsity sports, to achieve optimal athletic performance and health.
Direct the development, implementation, and oversight of a comprehensive and integrated performance nutrition and clinical dietetics program for all student-athletes that work cohesively with strength and conditioning professionals, athletic trainers, nutritionist, team physicians, and team coaches.
Direct the development, implementation, and oversight of a comprehensive and integrated sports psychology program, inclusive of behavioral and mental health services, fostering an environment connecting student-athletes with mental health services and supports student-athlete well-being.
Provide direct oversight in the prevention and care of injuries and illnesses for all SUAD athletic teams with direct management of the health and safety of all athletic teams. This also encompasses team meal planning and assistance with team travel and medical staff arrangements.
Supervise all staff in the Sports Medicine Department providing daily supervision as well as written performance reviews.
Supervise the insurance specialist in terms of approval of athletically related student-athlete insurance claims and medical expenditures.
Establish and execute post-operative rehabilitation protocols. Provide post-surgical oversight rehabilitation programs or supervision of such programs for all sports.
Oversee and administer the comprehensive drug testing program. Directly reporting to the Deputy Athletics Director, and SU General Counsel. Drug testing duties include administration, record keeping, education and counseling referrals.
Maintain current and development of new medical policies and guidelines in direct collaboration with the Head Team Physician.
Continue to develop and maintain the Standard Operating procedures for the Sports Medicine Department.
Oversee and continue to develop, enhance, and maintain standard emergency protocols and procedures for all sports venues.
Supervise the eating disorders program by coordinating care from medical physician and full-time sports medicine staff as well as referrals for counseling.
Maintain student-athlete records for injuries/illnesses/rehabilitations and provide appropriate documentation for medical disqualifications and medical hardships.
Act as direct liaison to the school of exercise science. This includes general oversight and supervision of student progression through the graduate school.
Collaborate with SUAD, human resources, and athletic administration regarding staff hiring and maintaining a safe and healthy work place within the Athletics department.
Assign duties, sports assignments, and work schedules for Athletic Training Staff, including the full-time and certified graduate assistants.
Oversee and schedule pre-participation physical examinations and serve as liaison with outside physicians, health center medical personnel, and local medical providers.
Maintain a cost-effective inventory for soft goods and medical supplies. Supervise equipment maintenance and purchase. Develop and manage annual department budget.
Work cooperatively with the Head Team Physician to schedule physician coverage for medical clinic, appropriate practices/scrimmages, and game events, as well as special events.
Oversee and provide year-end reviews of vital statistics and student-athlete satisfaction survey.
Personal interaction and communication with the following: student athletes, coaches, sports medicine staff, physicians and allied health professionals, administrators, university personnel, local medical personnel, parents, alumni, recruits, visiting team personnel, officials, boosters.
Recruitment of adequate/qualified personnel is a mandatory function.
Supervise the full-time athletic training staff in all aspects of their positions; manage the day-to-day operations of all the athletic training rooms; manage and oversee performance of full time staff.
Oversee, administer, and manage drug testing program.
Represent the athletic department on campus with selected committees and departments as deemed necessary.
Manage the budget in a fiscally responsible manner; coordinate equipment maintenance; purchase and manage medical expenditures, and inventory management.
Qualifications: Master’s degree from an accredited institution in sports medicine, athletic training, or health related area and a minimum of five (5) years of NCAA Division I or professional head athletic trainer experience. CPR/AED certification and New York State physical therapy licensure desired.
Job Specific Qualifications: National Athletic Training Association Board of Certification (NATABOC) certified. Licensed as an athletic trainer in New York or eligible at the time of employment. New York physical therapy license preferred.
Strong communication skills required. Must be able to work flexible hours including evenings and weekends.
Must be able to travel the country and abroad.
