The Frontier Conference is accepting applications and nominations for the position of Conference Commissioner. The Frontier Conference is an NAIA collegiate athletic conference comprised of six full time members and four associate members. Members compete for conference championships in Football, Men's and Women's Basketball, Men's and Women's Cross-country, Men's and Women's Golf, Men's and Women's Outdoor Track and Field, and Women's volleyball. The conference has 10 national championships in the sports of Football (7), Women’s Basketball (2), and Men’s Basketball (1). Numerous student-athletes have won individual national championships in track and field. Full conference members are: Carroll College, Montana Technological University, Montana State University - Northern, Rocky Mountain College, University of Montana Western, and University of Providence. Associate members for football are Arizona Christian, College of Idaho, Eastern Oregon University, and Southern Oregon University.
The Frontier Conference is a partnership of student-focused colleges and universities with strong athletic traditions and shared commitments to academic achievement, service to our communities, and developing life skills through character-driven athletics. The next Commissioner will remain committed to the balance of academic and athletic excellence, while being dedicated to providing a positive student- athlete experience and developing a strategic vision that will ensure the Frontier Conference is a strong functioning conference well into the future.
The Frontier Conference Commissioner reports directly to the Council of Presidents (COP). The responsibilities of the Commissioner include, but are not limited to the following:
Serve as a liaison for, and between, the COP and the Frontier Conference Council of Athletic Directors (CAD);
Assist the COP President assembling and submitting materials, agendas, meeting requests, and minutes for COP meetings;
During COP meetings, provide support to the President;
Assist the CAD Chair in assembling and submitting materials, agendas, meeting requests and minutes for CAD meetings.
Manage CAD meetings with support provided by CAD Chair;
Serve as an ex-officio member of all Conference committees;
Submit annual budget to the COP for review and approval;
Hire and supervise the Frontier Conference Sports Information Director (part-time);
Nominate and supervise the Conference Eligibility Chair;
Contract and coordinate officials in association with the Coordinator of Officials for each sport;
Provide oversight to the Conduct and Competition Committee and promptly communicate disciplinary action decided upon by the committee to coaches, institutional personnel, student-athletes, and spectators;
Promote the conference with the media and seek sponsorships or endorsements of conference championship events;
Seek external funding through the solicitation of sponsorships, submissions of grants, and philanthropic giving;
Standardize the purchase of conference certificates, awards, medals, and trophies;
Update constitution, by-laws, administrative policies, and sports guidelines on an annual basis and distribute them to each member institution;
Recruit and mentor potential new Frontier Conference members;
Serve as the liaison between the Conference and representatives of the media;
Develop competitions schedules in coordination with sport coaches and supervise all conference championships;
Other duties as assigned by the COP
Preferred Qualifications, Skills, and Experiences
A self-starter who can manage multiple tasks and responsibilities with minimal supervision;
Ability to create consensus, build trustworthy relationships, and develop a collaborative environment with various conference constituents;
Strong organization skills with an attention to detail and a high level of accuracy;
Leadership skills with demonstrated experience in strategic planning, organization development, and athletic event management;
Proven oral and written communication skills;
Keen understanding and familiarity of social media and the ability use to advance the brand of the Frontier Conference.
Demonstrated knowledge and experience in athletics communications, public relations, advertising, marketing, and brand promotion;
Experience in collegiate athletic administration and a thorough working knowledge of NAIA rules and regulations;
A strong business aptitude and an entrepreneurial spirit;
Enjoyment working with collegiate coaches, administrators, and students-athletes.
Position Requirements:
Residence within the state of Montana;
The Commissioner will be expected to work from his/her home office.
A bachelor’s degree is required; Master’s degree is preferred.
