The University of Maryland is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Senior Graphic Designer. The position will work as a member of the Intercollegiate Athletics external operations staff under the direct supervision of the Senior Assistant Athletic Director, Marketing Strategy & Fan Experience. The Senior Graphic Designer will serve as our internal design hub and will be responsible for creating an inspirational visual identity for Maryland Athletics with the primary purpose of maximizing brand engagement and enhancing revenue generation. They will provide direct oversight of the Social Media & Graphic Design Assistant as well as a team of student design interns.
Responsibilities include: This role will manage a high volume of graphic design work with a primary focus on supporting the creative needs of the entire athletic department, particularly within our external areas, including development, marketing, ticketing, media relations, broadcasting & production and sponsorship. The Senior Graphic Designer will work directly with the Senior Assistant AD of Marketing Strategy & Fan Experience to review and establish (as necessary) departmental brand standards, inclusive of a yearly creative asset review/analysis as part of Athletics’ department-wide branding efforts. The position will also collaborate with other external staff members to design creative assets and content for our digital platforms, including social media, email, website and mobile; and coordinate design concept art for brand campaigns.
The Senior Graphic Designer will assist with creative support and design materials for fundraising campaigns and capital projects; collaborate with external teams to lead photo shoots (execution and direction), photo selection, and photo management. It will coordinate and implement design best practice tools, templates, and technologies to drive effectiveness and efficiency across the organization; oversee a graphic design internship program (including intern recruitment, retention and oversight); assist with special projects, including the enhancement of environmental mediums within our athletic facilities; coordinate high level presentation design materials in support of revenue generation initiatives and organizational communication; and perform other duties as assigned, including providing support at select athletic events.
Minimum Qualifications:
A minimum of five (5) years of relevant work experience in graphic design with a demonstrated understanding of design principles.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Expert-level proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator and After Effects).
Strong photography retouching skills (Photoshop or Lightroom).
Ability to produce a high volume of graphics on deadline while maintaining a high quality of work.
Demonstrated experience designing for social media and email platforms, including an understanding of both content marketing and visual storytelling.
Ability to work cross-functionally to achieve department goals and within the defined constraints of our organizational brand standards.
Ability to manage time independently and juggle multiple tasks and projects for different clients simultaneously.
Other Required Qualifications:
Design portfolio demonstrating high level strategic design sensibilities and strong illustrative skills which translate to supporting our business verticals.
Must be able to work nights, weekends, and non-traditional hours.
Preferences: Experience at the NCAA division I or professional sports level.
