GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The Athletic Academic Success and Community Engagement Coordinator serves the academic and community engagement needs of the student-athlete population by providing academic monitoring, resources and accountability for all student athletes. In addition, this position will collaborate with existing campus resources such as the tutoring center, Student Support Services, and retention and student success leadership to connect student-athletes to these resources and identify those who may be at risk for leaving the university. Finally, the position will coordinate with coaches and others on campus to create opportunities for community service and engagement with the larger Southern Wesleyan University's (SWU) community (e.g., Fine Arts, Student Activities, etc.). Student-athletes will be better served by the support, accountability and one-on-one attention provided in this role. This is a 10-month position (August-May) reporting to the Director of Athletics and is classified as regular, full-time, salaried, exempt; eligible for benefits. The job is located on SWU's main campus in Central, South Carolina. Projected hire date is August 1, 2023.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Academic Monitoring - 40%
Monitor all student-athlete grades and supervise reporting to coaches. Provide one-on-one accountability to student-athletes with poor academic performance. Coordinate with the Office of Retention in the identification of and intervention of at-risk student-athletes. Coordinate with Academic Records, Financial Aid, Student Accounts and Academic Advisors to aid in the registration of all student-athletes. Provide additional review of student-athlete advising and registration to ensure academic eligibility standards are met.
Student-Athlete Emotional Well Being - 40%
Create and maintain study groups, process groups, and support groups for student-athletes. Work alongside Career Services to provide professional development training for student-athletes.
Community Engagement - 20%
Coordinate with coaches to provide opportunities for community service on campus. Coordinate with coaches to provide opportunities for engagement with the campus community outside of athletics. Coordinate with community service organizations and local schools to increase SWU’s presence in the area and engage more young people and families with SWU athletics.
QUALIFICATIONS
Must have a bachelor’s degree. A master's degree is preferred.
Must have a minimum of one (1) year of experience working in athletics and academics.
Must have demonstrated leadership abilities with students, coaches and faculty.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills are essential. Must be able to effectively communicate with various institutional constituencies (e.g., faculty, administration, students, parents, staff, alumni, and friends) in order to strengthen integration and relationships with the University.
SWU is committed to maximizing the use of technology in its daily operations and in achieving its strategic goals; the ideal candidate will be familiar with integrated database management systems, including reporting, and have a high comfort level with web-based, mobile and PC applications including but not limited to the use of Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

Physical/Environmental Requirements: Visual acuity necessary to do editorial work, proof documents, and manage files. Requires ability to sit for periods of time in an interior office environment. May require infrequent lifting of objects up to 10 pounds, and occasionally items up to 20 pounds. Position may require the flexibility to work occasional night and weekend hours.
